Life is a Promise

"...How easy it is to start our day dominated by the thought of schedules or difficulties to confront, or awareness of where we'd failed the day before (or all of the above!). Seeing the day as given and full of promise doesn't usually dominate! Perhaps this is why the Church gives us this prayer in the morning, to remind us of the great fact: "He has come to his people and set them free!" Waking up with hope on our lips is more correspondent then worry - a truer position in front of the fact that all is given to draw us to Him." taken from the Canticle of Zechariah and Holly Peterson - Magnificat Advent Companion

Birthday Lunch!

The girls came into the kitchen today and announced that we would be having lunch in the dining room. I went in there to find the table set and the candlesticks out. They announced the guests: Lord Lucas, Sir Gabriel, Lady Molly, and Sirs Stormy and Sunny (the birds!). They served everything very elegantly, and when I finally noticed I heard Handel playing over the speaker in a beautiful symphony! The idea spawned from Monica's Grammar lesson on giving oral directions. She decided to investigate how to set a table and will be giving us an oral demonstration sometime next week or over the break.

Here are a few pics. Very cute.:)

Advent Lapbooks

I had the kids start their Advent lapbooks yesterday. These are great! They'll have something to do every day of Advent plus weekly. There is a lot of information here on each Sunday of Advent, the Christmas symbols, the Jesse Tree, the Advent Calendar, Advent reflections writings, the O Antiphons, and the feast days in Advent.

I splurged and bought the multi-colored file folders to get the purple ones. I'm glad I did...sure beats the plain manila file folder.:)

Here are a few pics of our Thanksgiving. There aren't many but these are cute.

Christmas Cheer!

Here are the Christmas cookies I made yesterday. I am equally excited about these! The packaging is fun, too. Most of the cookies each get a sealed cellophane bag with a tiny ribbon accent. I boxed up a few half dozens as well that will be decorated with ribbon and ingredient and "You Smart Cookie" labels.

Fun, Fun!

Fall Cookies

I am so excited about these cookies! We are donating these for a craft/bake sale this weekend and half are done. The other half will be Christmas cookies. Who knows what those will look like! For the time being, these fall leaves and acorns are finished!! The first pic shows the acorns better, and the second shows the colors better. Oh, well.:( I bake...I don't photograph.:(

The Kids' Halloween Party '09

Here are a few pics of the kids' halloween party downstairs. Paul was also lounging and watching his favorite part of "The Great Pumpkin," the WWI Flying Ace.

Halloween 2009

We've been so busy cleaning house getting ready for the Feast of All Saints tomorrow that I'm glad the kids handled their own Halloween costumes. They've prepared a party for themselves downstairs, and I'm staying behind with Jane to make their dinner. It's about 40 degrees outside so they're bundled up underneath their costumes.

Here they are:
A nun, a pioneer girl, Dorothy, a spider, a knight, and a papoose

Cute stuff!

Healthy Bread in 5 Minutes A Day

A few days ago, I decided to make up a batch of artisan bread dough. I took this recipe from "Healthy Bread in 5 Minutes A Day" which says little work yields great rewards with this one. I decided to bake a loaf today. It's in the oven now, and the kids are excited to have it for lunch. I can't say how much I love the smell of freshly baked bread and no kneading is an absolute triumph! I just might buy the book, but for now this recipe just might work fine. Here's a link to their website: http://www.artisanbreadinfive.com/

Recent Homeschool Projects

Here are a few pics of a few recent homeschool projects.

1) Homeschool bake sale at our neighbor's garage sale
2) Ancient Civilizations puppets the girls made for Ancient History
3) Monica baked a Parkin cake for Am. History with a friend
4) Monica baking blueberry muffins for her MN History project
I guess most of our projects are History projects.:)

The Winter That Came Too Soon

Paul challenged the kids to compose a poem to commemorate our Fall snow day. Here's what we all came up with:

The Winter That Came Too Soon

One Fall morning in a quiet house,
The snow crept in as quiet as a mouse.
It fell on the ground and on the fence.
And on the geraniums that had no defense.

The Fall colors weren't out.
Halloween had not come.
We were caught unawares.
Our Fall was now done.

Snowy hayrides,
Frost on a pumpkin,
Frozen apples,
And wet leaves to jump in.

We were not prepared for Winter so soon,
But maybe the snow will melt before noon.

Bin-ology

n. the art of coming to terms with a changing season, a child that has surely grown a size larger, and a labeled bin that is somewhere in your home that needs clothes changed out of it and into said child's drawer. Of course, this takes anywhere from 20 mins. to an hour. Know that you will surely lose your mind if you have more than 1 child to change seasonal clothes around for. This is advised for those who live on 1 level, are not pregnant, and have a husband that works from home.

Damn, that's not me!!

What are you saying?

The other day as Gabe was eating a bowl of nuts he came to ask the following:
"Mommy, what are ROMANS?
"Romans are people who live in Rome. They were once an ancient civilization, very advanced, and contributed a lot to our present society."
"No, Mommy, what are OMENS?
"Omens are spirits...they can be good or bad."
"No, ALMONDS!"
"Oh, Almonds are nuts...a very long nut, Gabe!"

I think my brain is firing just a little too heavy on the homeschooling front in anticipation for starting school!

Eating on the Cheap - Food Revelations

Two things I've helped Paul realize:

1) We are a 2 lbs. of burger/meal family

2) He asked me to buy steak knives today. I told him only white people use steak knives because they actually get to eat steak. I said Mexican families take steak, cube it (so everyone gets some), and make carne guisada that you can eat with tortillas. No steak knives required! I told him I need to start cooking for him like the Mexican husband that he is.

New Additions

So, Paul finally caved in on the idea of Pets! We are now the proud owners of two cute parakeets. The kids love them, and they are pretty easy to care for. Here's a pic of Stormy (blue) and Sunny (yellow/green), our newest additions to our family.

Dreading the Afternoon

It's time to order our books for the year! I am really dreading it and yet it's on the calendar so I have to get it done today. A box of books came yesterday, and I haven't opened it yet. I think it's the fear of having to find more shelf space, bin space, and other storage spaces for all the incoming "stuff" for the year. I always tell Paul that 3/4 of my life is currently spent straightening, organizing, pitching, resorting, and compiling. It's a mind-set, a groove, a zone that one has to be in. I should have known there was something in the cards for me when I used to get a thrill out of taking everything out of my closet, throwing it around my room, and loving to reorganize it all! Kids shouldn't like to organize stuff, but I did! Weird!!

My Homeschool Nerds

This afternoon the girls had a neighborhood girlfriend over to play. This kid doesn't like school and has been having trouble learning the states and capitals so the girls asked her if she wanted to listen to the radio. They treated her to their States and Capitals cassette and told her they would help her learn them!

I'm Feeling It!

I haven't been feeling it really, but today I am! I feel tired, a little dizzy, and I really want to take a nap. I think it's really starting to physically set in. I've been mentally preparing, but today my body is saying, "Are you ready for another adventure?"

Baby #7 is definately letting me know he/she is under construction.

Getting ready for another Play

Here is a pic of the girls with a column they made out of posterboard to be used as a prop for their Christmas play. They've been working on preparations for a few weeks. They quickly informed me that this column has an ionic top with a doric bottom. I was going to ask because I remembered my Art & Arch. class. However, they beat me to it. Maria said she had read about it in her History book. Thankfully, they really are learning something.;)

Heart and Soul

The girls have recently been trying to work out, "Heart & Soul" on the piano. I think they'll have it down pretty soon.:) It's cute to watch them play together!

Camp Song

Here's a video of the girl's group singing part of their camp song.

"Father in your footsteps, we light the path to holiness. Father in your footsteps to light the path to holiness...to holiness!"

Schoenstatt Camp & Mankato Pictures

Here are a few pics of the girls at the presentation on the last day of Schoenstatt Camp. Monica was there from last Sunday to this Thursday. After we picked her up, Maria, Molly & I drove to Mankato for an overnight and tours of the Betsy & Tacy houses there. The Betsy house was the childhood home of Maud Hart Lovelace, and the Tacy house was the childhood home of Francis "Bick" Kenney. What a fun day!

It was a fun girl's outing.

Monica's Piano Recital

Here's Monica playing her recital at home because the stinky videocam ran out of battery during the recitals at Hovland!! We're returning it, of course, and will be picking out another one.

Monica had a little trouble getting tired...it was such a long day & her piece is quite long. She made a good save in the middle.:)

Molly's Recital

Here's Miss Molly's first piano recital! She worked so hard for such a short piece and was very proud of herself, too.

Piano Recitals

The girls had their piano recitals on Saturday, June, 6. It's taken me this long to get to uploading them.:( Anyway, here's Maria's.

Oops!

I was on retreat last weekend so I missed Molly's 6th birthday. We had a party for the little girls the weekend before. Here are a few pics of our little ladies! Molly went nuts over her battery-powered Hello Kitty toothbrush. I can't believe Molly and Jane are growing up so fast.:(
